Personal Support Worker - Diploma

Personal Support Workers are an important part of the health care team. The Personal Support Worker Program enables you to develop skills required to provide personal support services to patients and their families, clients and residents in the community, at home, in hospitals and in long-term care facilities. Services provided by the PSW include assistance in routine daily living activities; mobility; personal care and hygiene; ongoing medical conditions and medications; and management of household activities.

The Personal Support Worker Diploma Program is an intensive 26 week program recognized by the National Association of Career Colleges. The triOS Program combines instructor led training with a clinical work placement designed to prepare students for a career in health care.

Topics of this program include: Career Management; Key Applications; CPR/First Aid; Individuality of the Person; Role of the Worker; Interpersonal Skills; Safety; Assisting a Person with Mobility; Abuse; Household Management and Meal Preparation; Providing Optimal Support/Care Planning; Personal Hygiene; Assisting the Family; Cognitive Impairment and Mental Health Issues; Assisting the Person to Manage Ongoing Conditions; Assisting a Person with Medications; Assisting the Person who is Dying; Clinical Practicum.

Career Opportunities
Excellent job opportunities are expected for this occupation, as rapid employment growth and high replacement needs produce a large number of job openings. The number of elderly people, an age group characterized by mounting health problems and requiring some assistance, is projected to rise substantially. In addition to the elderly, however, patients in other age groups will increasingly rely on home care, a trend that reflects several developments, including efforts to contain costs by moving patients out of hospitals and nursing care facilities as quickly as possible, the realization that treatment can be more effective in familiar rather than clinical surroundings, and the development and improvement of medical technologies for in-home treatment.

Personal Support Workers usually work for private and not-for profit homecare agencies. Some are self-employed. Personal Support Workers may also work for senior citizens? homes, nursing homes or hospitals. They also provide care in the client?s home.
